Okay so yesterday I got super pumped hearing about FSR 4 potentially working on the PS5 Pro now. Fanboys online were arguing about it, some said “Impossible!” others were like “Just tweak settings bruh.” Naturally, I had to poke around myself. Forget rumors, let’s see what this box can actually do.
Step 1: Digging Around in the Menus
Fired up the PS5 Pro, went straight to Settings > Screen and Video like always. Scrolled down to the Video Output section. Looked for anything new – FSR toggle? Upscaling options? Nada. Just the usual suspects: Resolution, VRR, HDR. Felt kinda disappointed. Sony loves hiding features deep.
Step 2: Hunting for the Secret Sauce
Remembered that sometimes you gotta unlock stuff. Saw my game was running at “Automatic” resolution. Switched it to 2160p manually. Booted into a super demanding game – the one that makes the fans sound like a jet taking off. Went into that game’s own settings menu. Buried deep under “Graphics” or “Display,” there it was: Upscaling Technology. Options were like:
- Native
- Performance
- Balanced
- Ultra Performance
- AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution
Selected FSR. No version number listed, just FSR. Typical console vagueness. Gotta trust the label.
Step 3: Playing Settings Roulette
Just picking FSR felt too easy. Saw another option under it: FSR Sharpening or something similar. Slider from 0 to 100. Fanboys online scream “SET IT TO 0 FOR TRUE FSR 4!” Others say “Nah, crank it up!”. Total chaos. Started at 50 like a safe bet. Game looked… off. Kinda blurry yet weirdly sharp edges? Messy.
Dropped the Sharpening down to 10. Looked cleaner, but maybe a tad soft? This is the annoying part – no perfect answer. Your eyes, your call.
Step 4: Did It Stick? (The Crucial Test)
Restarted the game just to be sure the settings held. Double-checked the in-game FSR option was still active. Then I looked for the real proof: Performance.
Before FSR, the game hovered around 45-50 fps in that crazy scene with explosions everywhere. After turning FSR on (and leaving most other fancy settings on High/Ultra), holy cow! It was bouncing between 58-60 fps. Way smoother! The image wasn’t as razor-sharp as Native 4K, no duh, but definitely playable and frankly impressive for the frames I was getting. Less jet engine noise from the PS5 Pro too! Bonus.
Step 5: The Verdict (My Two Cents)
Here’s the messy truth based on my fiddling:
- FSR ain’t a system setting on the PS5 Pro. It’s game by game. Go hunt in each game’s graphics menu. Stop looking for a magic switch in Sony’s menu.
- Don’t expect “FSR 4” labels. It’ll just say AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution or FSR. Gotta go by the performance jump and how modern the game is.
- Sharpening slider is personal. Try 10, 30, 50. See what stings your eyes least. Low settings seemed way better for image quality.
- FPS boost? Hell yeah. Worth the slight softness? For fast games, 100%. For slower scenic ones? Maybe not. Toggle it per game.
No magic code, no secret dev mode. Just dive into the game settings, flip the switch, tweak the sharpening, and hope the FPS counter smiles at you. Worked for me on this title, might work for yours. Console gaming remains stubbornly manual!
