So I wanted to create cool character names for Baldur’s Gate 3 the other day. Seriously, coming up with decent fantasy names is harder than killing that hag in Act One. Started just brainstorming some elf-sounding words, but everything felt cheesy like “Legolass” or unpronounceable junk.
The Search Begins
Grabbed my laptop and searched around. Typed stuff like “fantasy name maker” and “rpg character names” into the search bar. Found tons of generators immediately, but most looked ancient – like 2005 Geocities vibes with flashing ads. Closed those faster than skipping a dialogue cutscene.
Testing Them Out
Decided to go through them properly. First tried clicking this popular “medieval name” site. Generated something called “Grunthar Stoneballs.” Uh, no way I’m calling my sorcerer that. Another one gave me “Sir Glittercheeks.” Made me LOL but not helpful for serious gaming.
Then found one specifically made for Baldur’s Gate characters. Better! It asked my character’s race and class first. Selected “Tiefling Warlock” and got options like “Zorvyn Ashfeather” and “Morvina Mistweaver.” Much nicer! Saved a few for later.
Sorting By Styles
Noticed each generator had flavors:
- Some made Viking-sounding names full of hard consonants (“Rurik Ironhide”)
- Others did elf poetry names ending with “-riel” or “-wyn” (“Luiniel Moonshadow”)
- A few let me pick surnames based on backstory – thieves got shadowy names, nobles got fancy ones
My favorite discovered this feature: combining prefixes/suffixes yourself. Mixed “Keth” + “oria” into “Kethoria” for my rogue. Felt way more personal.
The Final Verdict
After messing with like ten generators, here’s my top picks:
For classic fantasy feel:
- That Baldur’s Gate specific one nailed lore-friendly names
- A Tolkien-esque generator for elf/dwarf vibes
For quirky characters:
- One with “absurd mode” for jokey NPC names – saved “Bingle Shortstack” for a gnome
- An “edgy dark fantasy” slider that gave over-the-top demonic names
Spent almost two hours playing with these. Ended up with “Valorin Nightshade” for my dark urge playthrough – feels proper menacing without being cringe. Honestly, name generators got way better than I expected. Still skipping those Stoneballs names though.
