Okay folks, got some real talk today about messing around with that Pyroquickness Hat in Baldur’s Gate 3. Seriously wanted to see if it could turn some builds into straight-up fire. Started simple. Fired up the game with my level 5 wizard dude – figured, robes, staff, magic stuff… let’s slap this stupid-looking hat on him first.
First Try: Wizard Goes Brrr?
Popped the hat onto Gale. Used it before a fight in the Underdark near those exploding mushrooms. Thought I’d cast a quick Firebolt then maybe run. Hit the hotkey… boom, extra action! Zapped another Firebolt, felt like cheating. But then… nothing. Hat just sat there like a dead fish for the rest of combat. Cost that bonus action and didn’t spark up again. What? It’s supposed to work once per LONG REST? Seriously? Almost chucked my keyboard right then.
Feeling Dumb & Checking Stuff
Took a breath. Made a snack. Went digging into tooltips, old forum rants… ahhhh. Big mistake! Realized:
- This thing ain’t just “Press Button Get Fire”. It triggers when you USE fire spells or scrolls, not BEFORE.
- Super short-term buzz. You gotta spend that extra action FAST before it goes poof.
- Rests wreck it. If you nap? Say bye-bye to that stored energy. Stupid.
Second Round: Trying Sorcerer Stuff
Okay, restarted with my Sorcerer, thinking Metamagic might fix things. Kept Pyroquickness Hat equipped, waited for combat near a goblin camp. Got into a scrap, actually used Scorching Ray FIRST… and suddenly the hat icon lit up. Right. AFTER you fry something with fire? THEN it hands you one extra action. So I instantly Quickened Spell another fireball into some poor dude’s face. Felt MUCH better.
But almost screwed it again. Got cocky, tried swapping it onto Karlach (who was beside me) to get her an extra swing… but nope. Hat shut right off. Yeah. No swapping wearers mid-fight apparently. Good job wasting time.
What Actually Works Okay?
After like 2 hours dying repeatedly to gnolls just testing this dumb hat:
- Forget wizards. Takes them ages to burn a spell slot on something hot. They get one weak use then cry.
- Pure Sorcerer builds work decent? Spam fire spells constantly with bonus actions? You get extra attacks pretty regular. Still need babysitting.
- Wild Magic Barbarian with some random fire scrolls in their pocket? Kinda chaotic fun for extra rage swings… if they remember to cook stuff first.
Overall? Hat’s way too janky for real “optimized” builds. Feels like duct-taping your character together. Nice for one-off explosive moments? Absolutely. Makes you feel powerful for maybe half a fight? Then you trip over your own cape.
