The axe has always been a very popular type of weapon in the Diablo franchise. While many people feel that the axe isn’t fast enough to use and looks a bit bulky, the damage it delivers is very high, especially when facing an enemy with a single blow.
There are many types of axes, ranging from the lighter one-handed axes to the powerful two-handed great axes. The smallest type is the axe that can be thrown, and the Barbarian profession is particularly good at using these small axes, which can come in handy for both melee and long range attacks. Some warriors who liked to attack hard and didn’t pay much attention to defense usually preferred to use the big and heavy two-handed axe, because it was more powerful.
There is also a legendary magic axe, which is said to be so sharp that it can split iron blocks as easily as cutting tofu, doesn’t that sound awesome?
In fact, as early as Diablo 1, the axe was already the weapon of choice for many warriors. At that time, the axe in the game had a very cool look, especially at the beginning of the game, and many players prioritized the axe to boost their attack power.

The history of the axe
Diablo 1.
In Diablo 1, there is an impressive level – the second level of the “Butcher”.Not only is this monster hard to beat, but defeating him also drops a very memorable weapon: The Butchers Cleaver. This axe is not very durable and its attack power is not very stable, but it is treasured by many players because of its unique appearance and its status as the first Dark Gold equipment.
There was also an axe called the Messerschmidts Reaver with a very ornate design, which was a favorite dark gold axe in the minds of many players. However, this beautiful shape is not as common in later games.

Diablo 2.
By the time Diablo 2 came around, axes didn’t have quite the same status.Aside from the Hell Destroyer, an axe that works pretty well in the early game, the other axe weapons aren’t very impressive.

Diablo 3.
Upon entering Diablo 3, the axe is back on the player’s radar.Up until now, there have been many different types of axes in the game, such as:
- Gaff / Spitze: these are two of the more basic types of axes that look a bit like a military spade, have an attack speed of 1.2 and do between 40 and 55 damage.

- Heavy Axe

- Double-edged axe

- Hand Axe

- Military spade

- Double-handed axe

- Long Axe

Aside from the Gaff and Spitze, all of these other axe types actually appear in Diablo 2.
It’s worth mentioning that axes are among the bulkier weapons in the game, taking up space on two item bars, so they require a bit more attention when it comes to backpack management.

Who is suited to use an axe?
The Axe is arguably one of the iconic weapons of the Barbarian. This profession is naturally power-oriented and using an axe is more than appropriate. On the other hand, professions like the Witch Doctor, which favors spell output, are obviously less suited to fighting with an axe; and the Martial Monk prefers to use his fists and feet rather than relying on a weapon to fight monsters.
All in all, although the axe is not as flexible and fast as other weapons, the high damage and sense of strike it brings makes it always have a place in players’ hearts.
