Man, roguelikes on Switch grabbed me hard. Started poking around, you know, trying to see what all the fuss was about. Figured I’d share what I actually played – not just what sounded good.
First up, grabbed Hades on a whim. Heard everyone raving, so I booted it up. Immediately got why. Button-mashing slashy fun, felt amazing right away. Didn’t get far that first run, obviously died. But who cared? Talking to the characters afterwards, piecing together the story – that stuff hooked me way more than I expected. Kept diving back in, run after run. My thumbs got sore, but I couldn’t put it down. Saw myself getting slightly better each time, which felt awesome. Unlocked some wild weapons, kept dying to that darn Bone Hydra… but eventually, barely scraped through! Pure adrenaline rush.
Then I hit a wall.
Got obsessed, maybe played Hades way too much. Felt burned out, needed something different. Heard Dead Cells was brutally tough but rewarding. Figured, why not? Jumped straight in.
Yeah, it kicked my butt. Hard. Controls felt super tight but unforgiving. Ran through those biomes, swinging like crazy, dodging traps. My hands couldn’t keep up. Died fast. And then died again. And again. Seriously, died like… hundreds of times? But slowly, something clicked. Found better gear, learned enemy patterns, felt that sweet “aha!” moment when I finally beat a boss that crushed me before. The speed of it, the constant adapting – totally different itch scratched than Hades.
Needed a breather from all that intensity next. Saw people mention Slay the Spire. Card game? Roguelike? Huh. Booted it up one night when my thumbs were aching. Completely sucked at first. Played cards wrong, got wrecked by regular enemies. Felt kinda dumb. But… I stuck with it. Learned some synergies, picked better paths. Had this insane run where everything came together – the cards, the relics – and absolutely demolished the final boss. Felt like a genius! Totally gets its hooks in you with that “one more run” feeling.
Kept digging, tried a few others:
- Enter the Gungeon: Pure bullet-hell chaos. Dodging like mad, hoping for an OP gun drop. Frustrating but hilarious when you get buried in bullets.
- Into the Breach: Felt like a roguelike puzzle. Squeezing every single move for maximum effect, losing half my squad trying to protect buildings. Painfully fun.
What surprised me most? How wildly different these Switch roguelikes feel. Hades pulls you in with story and style, Dead Cells demands precision and speed, Slay the Spire is all about brain power and deckbuilding… they all do their own thing brilliantly. Found myself appreciating how each one twisted the core roguelike loop into something fresh. Definitely gotta try them yourself!
