Okay, so yesterday I fired up Baldur’s Gate 3 again, right? Wanted to try something new for dealing with those annoying tough fights early on. Kept hearing whispers online about this “Best Cold Set” thing being crazy good. Honestly, I was kinda skeptical – sounded like just another gimmick. But hey, thought I’d give it a proper go and see for myself.
First Attempt Was a Mess
Jumped straight into that grove fight near the beginning, near Kagha. Just slapped “Ray of Frost” and “Armour of Agathys” on Gale and my Warlock Tav without thinking much. Tried to lure them in close. Big mistake. Forgot those guys hit hard. My Armour popped way too early, barely chilled anyone, Gale got smacked down fast. Wiped. Total disaster. Felt stupid just rushing in like that.
Actually Planning This Time
Reloaded and took a breath. Needed a plan, obviously. Realized I had to control the battlefield way better. So here’s exactly what I did next:
- Positioning First: Found a narrow spot just inside the grove entrance. Made my Fighter Karlach and Shadowheart block the way forward, like a living wall.
- Layer the Ice: Put Gale up high on a ledge nearby with “Create Water” pre-cast. Drenched all the enemies bunched up. Huge splash, made ’em all wet.
- Bait and Trap: Sent my Warlock Tav right into the soggy mess center. Popped “Armour of Agathys” this time after they were wet, not before. Stood there looking juicy.
- Double Down on Cold: Gale immediately hit the wet crowd with “Ray of Frost”. Bonus action? Threw an Alchemist’s Fire flask for some extra chaos.
- Hold the Line: Karlach and Shadowheart just shoved anyone trying to get past them back into the puddle zone. Kept ’em clustered.
Seeing the Frostbite Kick In
Man, the difference was night and day. That wet status? It made Gale’s “Ray of Frost” hit like a frozen truck. Enemies trying to hit my Warlock just bounced off the “Armour of Agathys”, getting shredded by the icy backlash AND freezing solid because they were already wet. Slowed them down bad. Karlach cleaning up anyone left stumbling around felt almost unfair. Whole fight was over super quick. Barely took any real damage. Even Kagha looked surprised.
Why This Actually Works
It ain’t magic, just using the game’s systems smart. Making ’em wet first supercharges cold damage. “Armour of Agathys” punishes melee attackers hard, especially when you make them attack you in the wet zone. Controlling the space keeps ’em inside the cold hell you made. It clicked for me then – it’s not just casting cold spells, it’s about setting the whole damn stage so frostbite does the heavy lifting.
So yeah, “Best Cold Set”? Bit of a weird name, honestly. But forcing enemies to fight on your frozen, soggy terms? That’s the real sauce. Stomped through the next few fights way smoother just remembering: make ’em wet, lock ’em down, let the chill finish the job. Feels good man.
