Okay so today I just wanted to talk about sorting through all those BG3 mods everyone keeps talking about. Seriously, jumping back into the game after a few months felt like wading through mud. There’s just so many mods now!
Started simple, right? Just wanted to see what the community really loves, those top-rated must-haves that everyone seems to run. Figured I’d find a list somewhere and call it a day. Famous last words.
The Hunt for the Good Stuff
First thing I did was hop onto, well, the usual big mod spots. You know the ones. Just scanned through the ‘Popular’ or ‘Top’ sections. Quickly realized that wasn’t cutting it. ‘Popular this month’ didn’t tell me much about what folks really stick with long term. Felt like I was just seeing the new shiny toys, not the reliable workhorses.
Decided I needed to dig deeper. Started scrolling through comments and forum posts, trying to see which names popped up again and again when people said, ‘You absolutely need this.’ Took ages, honestly. My notes app got messy fast. Saw things like:
- That one mod letting you carry all your junk without constantly shuffling? Constantly mentioned.
- The UI mod everyone swears makes the game playable?
- Various spells and abilities from the tabletop folks were begging for?
- Massive bundles adding tons of new stuff? Mixed reactions.
Hit a major snag. Found a list claiming ‘Community Favorites’, but it felt super out of date. Half the links were dead ends or led to mods marked as broken by recent patches. Ugh. Felt like I wasted half an hour. Needed a new approach.
Building My Own List, the Hard Way
Gave up on finding a perfect list. Decided to compile my own damn ‘Extra Top Rated’ list based purely on real player chatter and current popularity ratings.
Here’s what I actually did:
- Went back to the mod sites but filtered specifically by ‘All Time’ popularity and highest ratings first. Ignored ‘Trending’.
- Scrolled through at least the first 50 results in each category (Gameplay, UI, Characters, etc.). Painful, but necessary.
- Forced myself to read the recent comments. Top mods from launch might be broken junk now. Looked specifically for notes about patch compatibility.
- Noted down anything mentioned as a ‘core’ mod by multiple different people in forum posts over the last few months. Not just one or two mentions, but consistent shouts.
- Ignored anything that was purely cosmetic unless it had insane ratings AND mentions. Focused on mechanics.
- Checked which mod authors kept their stuff updated. Big red flag if a popular mod hasn’t been touched since 2023.
Took most of my afternoon! Ended up with a spreadsheet. Felt a bit like overkill, but honestly? Now I have a list I actually trust.
The End Result (Kinda)
Finally landed on a pretty solid core list. Here’s the type of stuff consistently bubbled up to the top as legit community favorites:
- That Bag mod everyone raves about? Definitely stays.
- The Enhanced UI mod? Installed. Instantly.
- A few specific extra Feat mods? Found the ones folks actually say don’t break the balance.
- A couple of trusted ‘Expanded Spells/Classes’ packs? After careful reading, added them.
- A really popular mod letting you see the dice rolls? Yeah, surprisingly high demand.
The Big Takeaway? Finding the real ‘top rated community favs’ isn’t about grabbing the ‘Top 10’ list some blog spits out. It’s about grinding through the forums, reading hundreds of ‘I can’t play without X’ posts, and actually checking patch notes and mod author activity. It’s messy, it’s time-consuming, and frankly, kinda boring at times. But the payoff? A stable game that actually works with mods people truly love, not just the flavour of the week.
Would I do it again? Probably. Do I recommend it? Only if you really, really hate crashing and wasting your game time fixing broken mods like I did last weekend. Still mad about that corrupted save.
