My Hole Saw Buying Journey
So I needed a new hole saw set for weekend projects – specifically that Diablo 6-3-8 combo people keep mentioning. My old cheap set literally fell apart after cutting three holes in some plywood last month. Teeth just flew everywhere like popcorn. Total garbage.
Went online searching like everybody does these days. Man that was overwhelming! Prices all over the place, some kits missing sizes I needed, others looked flimsier than my last set. Kept seeing ads shouting “BEST VALUE!!” but the pics showed plastic cases already cracked. Nah.
Dug deeper into reviews after wasting an hour scrolling. Noticed folks complaining about wobble issues and teeth dulling fast on cheaper brands. One guy said his bargain bin set sparked like fireworks cutting through pine. Nope not doing that.
Finally remembered Joe from the hardware store mentioning Diablo’s carbide teeth hold up better. Found their official 6-3-8 kit specs:
- Steel plate reinforcement between each saw
- Proper size holes (not that 3⅛” nonsense others try passing off as 3″)
- Thick arbor that doesn’t bend when you press
Went straight to town next morning. Showed the guy my warped old set. He laughed and pulled out the Diablo kit immediately – solid metal case, no plastic nonsense. Gave it a shake test right there. Zero rattling. Felt dense like a brick. Forked over the cash feeling kinda smug.
Used it Sunday cutting holes for pipes through hardwood. Night and day difference! Smooth cuts with clean edges, no jumping or grabbing the wood. Didn’t even break a sweat doing eight holes back-to-back. Teeth still looked fresh after. Worth every damn penny.
Lesson learned? Don’t cheap out thinking all hole saws are the same. Paying extra saved me hours of frustration and buying twice. This thing’ll probably outlast my drill motor.
