My Weekend Gaming Mess-Up

So last Saturday, my buddies and me totally blanked on what to play together. Becky wanted swords and magic stuff. Dave wanted monsters to smash real fast. I dug out my dusty gaming stuff like “okay, let’s figure this out” and decided to mess with both Dungeons & Dragons and Diablo 3 back-to-back. Just gotta see which one sucked less… uh, I mean, worked better for us sitting around one room.

Starting With The Dice Stuff (D&D)

First thing Sunday morning, right? Big mistake. Needed way too much junk before we even started making characters:

  • Dragged out those thick books like I’m moving house.
  • Printed character sheets – printer jammed, obviously.
  • Found pencils… no erasers. Classic.
  • Becky’s boyfriend Mike showed up late holding coffee like it was gold.

Took us like an hour and a half just to finish making Mike his dwarf fighter guy. Becky kept changing her mind about her elf’s name. Dave got grumpy ’cause he couldn’t just hit stuff immediately. The book flipping and dice rolling felt kinda slow after the caffeine wore off. Trying to follow the starter adventure book? Half the time I was making junk up ’cause nobody remembered the rules for jumping over a pit. Dave tried stealing from Becky’s elf. Chaos. Good weird chaos, though. Took all afternoon to fight some dumb goblins in a cave.

Switching To The Clicky Monster Game (Diablo 3)

After pizza (duh), we plugged the PlayStation in. Figured Diablo 3 might be faster.

  • Booted it up, dumped everyone on the couch.
  • Grabbed controllers – mine had sticky buttons from god-knows-what.
  • Dave picked the giant angry guy Barbarian first. Smash button ready.
  • Becky took the wizard chick. Magic explosions everywhere.
  • Mike took demon hunter, looked bored.

Holy smokes, it was like flipping a switch! Just jumped straight into killing skeletons like ten seconds in. Way faster than D&D. Dave was laughing like crazy smashing stuff. Felt kinda simple though? Just running around, clicking buttons, shiny loot popping out. Becky liked all the sparkles and explosions. Mike felt kinda left out ’cause his guy leveled slower? Something called Paragon Levels – no clue. My couch is small. Elbows everywhere. Kinda boring after a bit? Like we were just grinding, y’know? Felt like a job after awhile. Needed more talking smack.

Figuring Out Which Suited Us Better

Later, eating cold pizza slices on the floor, we kinda argued about it:

  • Speed: Diablo 3 hands-down won. We were killing demons while D&D barely had us rolling dice.
  • Chaos Factor: D&D? Total nonsense chaos. Stories went weird places. Diablo? Just button mashing chaos.
  • Talking Junk: We argued and laughed way more playing D&D. Diablo, nah… just smashed monsters quietly.
  • Sticky Controllers: Yeah… Dave got soda on mine playing Diablo. Still sticky. Still mad about it.

So… what worked for my messy weekend? Diablo 3 if you want quick smashy fun with minimal thinking before pizza shows up. D&D if you got all day, wanna actually talk crap to each other, and make up stupid stories. Seems obvious, right? I needed to waste a Saturday figuring that out though. Feels like Diablo 3 is like clicking together. D&D… it’s more imagining stuff together. Way different vibes. Needed pizza stains on character sheets to really get it.
