Diablo 2: Why Some Monsters Can’t Drop Some Dark Gold Gear

In Diablo 2, gear drops seem to be random, but there is actually a set of rules behind it.For example, monsters in Hell difficulty have a higher probability of dropping good equipment than monsters in Nightmare difficulty. And the higher the scenario level, the more types of equipment that can be dropped in the same difficulty.

However, some high-level dark gold equipment (especially those very rare ones) can’t be dropped by just any monster. They have relatively high requirements for drop conditions.Today, we’re going to talk about why Elite monsters like the “Grumpy Skin” sometimes fail to drop some of the top Dark Gold gear.

There are levels of gear.

Every piece of equipment in the game has a “quality level”, which ranges from 1 to 87.Think of it as a building with 87 floors. Each floor corresponds to a specific piece of equipment. For example, the 85th floor might have Sacred Armor, while the 87th floor has some top quality Dark Gold equipment.

However, it is important to note that the same equipment may have different levels for different qualities. For example, the white “Sacred Armor” is level 85, while the dark gold “Tyrael’s Power” is level 87.

The quality of equipment (white, blue, yellow, green, dark gold) is not fixed, but is also affected by other factors, such as the level of the monster.

Monsters also have their own “status level”.

Each monster has its own “Treasure Class” (TC for short), which determines which level of equipment it can drop, up to a maximum of level 87, which is equivalent to a pyramid structure, where higher level monsters can drop lower level equipment, but not vice versa.

In addition to the treasure level, there is another key factor: the level of the monsters themselves.Only when a monster’s level is equal to or higher than the quality level of a certain piece of equipment can it drop a dark gold version of that piece of equipment.

The level of a normal monster is usually equal to the level of the scene it is in.Blue leader monsters will be 2 levels higher and elite monsters will be 3 levels higher. As for Bosses, their levels are set individually and are not subject to this rule.

The highest level scenario in the entire game is the pinnacle of the Yarite Mountains on Hell difficulty, which is a level 87 area, but quite unusually, the monsters here hardly drop any equipment. So the highest level scenario that actually drops gear is actually level 85.

Let’s take a look at Grumpy Skin

The “Grumpy Skin” is an elite monster that many players like to brush because it’s conveniently located and quick to fight.Let’s take a look at its drop settings:

  1. Treasure level is level 87: this means it can drop all levels of equipment, including level 87 equipment.
  2. The level of the scene it’s in is level 83: since it’s an elite monster, its actual level is 83 + 3 = 86.
  3. The monster level is level 86: but many of the top dark gold equipment have a quality level of 87.
  4. Here’s the problem: the monster level must be greater than or equal to the quality level of the equipment in order to drop the dark gold version of that equipment. The “Grumpy Skin” has a level of 86, which is lower than 87, so it can’t drop these level 87 Dark Gold gear.

What are the pieces of gear that it can’t drop?

The following pieces of Dark Gold equipment have a quality level of 87, so Grumpy Skin cannot drop them:

  • Aquamarine Rage (aka Cyan Rage)
  • Terrill’s Strength.
  • Spider’s Web.

While it doesn’t drop these three items, it does drop a lot of gear, including most of the Dark Gold gear and runes. As such, it’s still one of the characters that’s great for brushing MFs.

If you really want to brush all the dark gold gear, then you should go to the level 85 scenario more often to brush the monsters. This is because the elite monsters that appear there are of a higher level and have a chance to drop all the level 87 dark gold equipment.

Summary:

  • Equipment has a quality level, the highest being level 87.
  • Monsters also have treasure levels and their own levels.
  • Only if the monster’s level ≥ the equipment’s quality level can it drop the Dark Gold version of that equipment.
  • The level of “Grumpy Skin” is 86, so it can’t drop level 87 Dark Gold equipment.
  • If you want to get all the gear, we recommend going to the level 85 area.
