Yesterday I tried tackling the Great Rift with my usual Necromancer, but got stuck around level 90. My character was grinding monsters super slowly, and casting skills felt like tickling—even I found it boring. While browsing the forums, I spotted someone recommending an insanely powerful Necromancer build. At first, I thought it was clickbait—who’d believe that? But today I tried it out myself—wow, it’s a whole different ballgame! Monsters get obliterated before they even react. Below, I’ll walk you through the entire process step by step, without any jargon, just like chatting with a friend.
First, Get the Right Gear—This Is Key
To make your Necromancer truly powerful, skills alone aren’t enough—your gear has to be up to snuff. I started by rummaging through my stash to see what I had. The key piece is a set called “Carnival of Burning Masquerade,” which has six pieces total. I already had three, just missing the pants.
For those pants, I ran over ten normal Great Rifts in a row, spending Blood Shards each time to have Khadra reforge my gear. The process was incredibly tedious—low drop rates and a huge time sink. But there was no way around it; without this set, my damage just wouldn’t scale later on. Finally, those green pants dropped. Ugly as sin, but the stats were perfect.
I also swapped out my weapon for “Lelena’s Shadow Hook Scythe,” which helps me build energy faster. I paired it with the “Phantom” skill, which stores mana—like carrying a portable charger, so I don’t constantly worry about running out of blue.
Skill Build: Don’t Just Randomly Press Buttons
Next up is skill selection. I used the following:
- Devour (with “Psionic” rune): This skill slowly restores my health, eliminating the need to constantly use potions. Perfect for prolonged battles.
- Bone Spear (with “Crystalline” rune): My primary damage skill. High damage, fast firing speed—max it out.
- Phantom (choose “Charge”): This is crucial for storing energy. Cast one before boss fights to pre-charge your power.
- Skeleton Command (choose “Rage”): Summons small skeletons to block enemies, preventing them from charging directly at you.
My first attempt was a disaster—I panicked, spammed clicks, and the skeletons died instantly. I forgot to activate Phantom, got swarmed by mobs, and died instantly. I was so frustrated I almost quit.
Slowly practicing to find the rhythm
Later, I watched a few minutes of gameplay footage and realized my mistake: I wasn’t casting Phantom in time during combat! That’s like heading out without a power bank. Also, you can’t just summon Skeletons once—especially against elite enemies—you need to constantly replenish them.
On my second attempt, I adjusted my sequence: enter the map, deploy Phantom first, then summon Skeletons. Only after they positioned themselves did I start attacking with Bone Spear. I still died three times initially, but gradually found my groove. A handy trick: I bound Bone Spear to my mouse wheel. This way, I could unleash it with a scroll without switching skills—making combat much smoother.
How satisfying is it? Enemies vanish before they even get close
Once I truly mastered the rhythm, the results were immediate. The Level 90 fissure that had stumped me before? Cleared effortlessly this time. I even tried a Level 95 one—and when I saw the critical hit damage? 800 billion! I was shocked myself. I still have the screenshot saved on my phone. When I posted it in the guild chat, my teammates accused me of tampering with the data and refused to believe it.
Back when I used Skeleton Mage or Blood Nova, it took multiple hits to take down mobs. Now, one shot from Bone Spear and they’re vaporized. Sometimes enemies drop before I even get close. I cleared three consecutive fights, grinning like an idiot the whole time—no tension whatsoever.
Bottom line: It’s tough, but worth it
This build has its downsides. Gear is hard to farm—especially those pants, which made me sick of grinding. Plus, if your timing slips—like forgetting to cast Phantom or letting your skeletons die too fast—your character becomes fragile and dies easily.
But once you master it, boss fights feel like firing a cannon—one shot sends them flying. I’ve decided to stick with this build unless the next update changes the rules.
Ultimately, playing Necromancer isn’t about luck—it’s about synergizing skills, gear, and execution. Don’t worry if you struggle at first; everyone starts by mashing buttons. Keep practicing, and you’ll unleash absurd damage too.
