why I tried making a dark souls figure
Got tired of paying crazy prices for official figures. Thought hell I could just make my own. Saw some polymer clay lying around my garage leftover from christmas decorations. Figured Solaire would be cool cause that sun bro armor looks dope.
starting the damn thing
Grabbed my cheapest clay first. Started rolling a ball for the head. Totally messed up the proportions. Head looked like a damn potato with eyes. Scrapped that lump after two hours. Dug out some wire from my toolbox to make a skeleton frame this time. Wrapped thinner wires around thicker ones for arms and legs. Hurt my fingers twisting that crap.
clay disasters everywhere
Started slapping clay on the wire frame. Worked from feet up. Legs kept collapsing under the weight. Hadta stop every five minutes to prop it up with books. When I got to the chest plate, the texture sucked. Tried carving patterns with a toothpick. Looked like a toddler scribbled on it. Got pissed and smooshed it flat.
almost quit right here
Took reference pics of Solaire on my phone. Noticed armor plates overlap like fish scales. Cut tiny clay triangles with nail scissors. Burned my hand on the stupid hair dryer trying to harden them faster. Broke three pieces trying to attach them. Used superglue which made white crusty marks. Nearly threw the whole thing in the trash.
how I saved this mess
- Covered glue stains with bronze paint
- Made the helmet plume from unraveled rope dipped in glue
- Dipped the whole thing in floor wax for shine cause varnish was expensive
Took me three weeks of evenings. Arms fell off twice. The sword’s still bent. But now it sits on my shelf looking janky as hell. Friends ask if it’s some mutant zombie. I just say “praise the sun” and shrug. Still better than paying $200.
