How to Add Sockets in Diablo 2 - 3 Easy Ways You Need to Know

Okay folks, today was all about frustration turning into action. See, I’ve been grinding away trying to get better gear in Diablo II, and hitting that wall where nothing I find has enough holes… I mean sockets! Needed them bad for better runes or jewels. So yeah, “How to Add Sockets in Diablo II – 3 Easy Ways You Need to Know” became my mission.

Starting Out Clueless (Like Always)

Honestly, I was just blindly slapping gems into stuff that already had sockets, hoping something cool would happen. Spoiler: it didn’t magically create new slots. Big surprise, right? Felt kinda dumb. Then I remembered that dude in Act V, Larzuk? The guy you rescue? Figured he must be good for something other than saying thanks.

Method #1: Taking the Easy Way Out (Larzuk)

Looked him up in my act notes. Found him just chilling in Harrogath like always. Talked to him, and sure enough, he offers a “SOCKET QUEST” reward! Seemed perfect.

  • Grabbed the stuff I wanted punched full of holes. Had this plain white Superior Breast Plate that dropped off Nightmare Mephisto. Decent defense, no sockets. Seemed a good candidate.
  • Smacked the item into Larzuk’s trade window. Clicked the “Quest” button instead of “Trade”.
  • BOOM! Just like that, my armor had three shiny new sockets! Simple. Fast.

Problem? You only get ONE shot per difficulty level per character! Used my Normal one ages ago on some trash, wasted it. Blew my Nightmare quest on this armor. Now I’m screwed for Hell difficulty? Ouch. Not unlimited. Gotta find Plan B.

Method #2: Kitchen Sink Magic (Horadric Cube)

Remembered the Cube is good for more than just making lousy runes. Dug around old forum screenshots I saved. Found a recipe! Looked crazy, but worth a shot.

  • Scrounged through my stash. Needed:
    • A white or grey base item (my target – found a plain Crystal Sword)
    • A Ral Rune (had one from Countess runs)
    • An Amn Rune (another Countess special)
    • A Perfect Amethyst (picked one off corpse looting)
  • Chucked everything into the Cube. Ral + Amn + Perfect Amethyst + the plain Crystal Sword. Closed the lid. Held my breath.
  • Hit Transmute. Swirly Cube magic happened! Out popped… the same Crystal Sword, but now it had THREE sockets!

Catch? It’s basically gambling. You don’t know how many sockets you’ll get! It depends on the item type and its level. Could get 1, could get max? Total crapshoot. Used it on a different Broad Sword later and got only ONE socket. Bummer. Also, finding those specific runes and the perfect gem? Not always quick.

Method #3: Getting Lucky (Drops)

Kinda obvious but easily forgotten. Sometimes monsters are just nice enough to drop stuff already socketed!

  • Farmed areas like Mausoleum, The Pit, Cow Level. Just killed stuff constantly.
  • Started actually LOOKING. Not just at the text, but at the visual holes in the gear when it drops! You can see them on the item sprite.
  • Scored! Found this nasty flail-thing, a Knout, grey text meaning low quality, but guess what? It already had TWO sockets right there!

Reality Check: This ain’t a method to add sockets. It’s pure luck finding stuff pre-drilled. The drop rates for what you specifically want? Yeah… don’t hold your breath. Takes ages usually.

So Which One Wins?

Honestly, they all suck a little? But here’s the deal after trying them all:

  • Larzuk: Guaranteed max sockets for your item type? Awesome. But ONLY ONE PER CHARACTER PER DIFFICULTY. Choose wisely! Like using it on something super rare. Don’t blow it on junk like I did first time.
  • Horadric Cube: Good when you got the runes and gems burning a hole in your stash. BUT! It’s random sockets. Feels bad when you roll low. Save it for stuff with multiple possible sockets, like helms or shields.
  • Drops: Pure luck. Best if you just need any socketed base item for a budget runeword. Terrible if you need something specific like a 4-socket Polearm yesterday.

That’s my grind today. Larzuk is your best friend, but he’s like that efficient government worker – one request per customer, please. Cube is the sketchy dealer down the alley – might get what you want, might get ripped off. Drops? Like finding cash on the street. Rare, but feels great when it happens.
