Order of Quetzalcoatl: Membership Requirements Overview
The Order of Quetzalcoatl is an invitational body within the Masonic organization, dedicated to promoting fellowship, social enjoyment, and charitable activities. Membership is exclusive, requiring specific eligibility and sponsorship.
Prerequisites for Membership
- Masonic Affiliation: Candidates must be Master Masons in good standing within a regularly constituted Lodge recognized by the Conference of Grand Masters of North America.
- Shrine Membership: Membership in the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (Shriners International) is a mandatory requirement. This is the primary prerequisite for entry.
- Good Moral Character: The candidate must possess an unblemished reputation and exhibit high moral and ethical standards, consistent with the principles of Freemasonry.
- Commitment to Fellowship: Prospective members are expected to be active participants, committed to the social and fraternal aims of the Order.
The Application and Sponsorship Process
Unlike many Masonic organizations, membership in the Order of Quetzalcoatl is strictly by invitation only. A Mason cannot simply petition for membership.
Required Steps:
- Sponsorship: A prospective member must be sponsored by at least one current member (often two sponsors are required, depending on the Teocalli—the local chapter). Sponsors must be members in good standing.
- Recommendation: The sponsors present the candidate’s name to the Teocalli for consideration.
- Investigation: An investigative committee examines the candidate’s Masonic and personal background, verifying eligibility and suitability.
- Balloting: Following the investigation, the existing members of the Teocalli vote on the candidate. Approval requires a unanimous or near-unanimous ballot (blackballing is possible).
- Initiation: Upon successful balloting, the candidate is invited to receive the Order’s degrees and become a Noble.
Key Characteristics of a Successful Candidate
Successful candidates typically demonstrate a strong history of participation and dedication within both their Blue Lodge and the Shrine. The Order seeks individuals who will contribute positively to the Teocalli environment.
- Enthusiasm for Fraternalism: A genuine desire to engage in the social and convivial aspects of the Order.
- Willingness to Serve: Active participation in charitable functions and internal Teocalli activities (known as “Feasts”).
- Compatibility: Integration into the existing fraternity is highly valued, prioritizing social compatibility among members.
